As we age, our blood vessels also change: they lose their elasticity and their physiological ability to regulate blood flow and supply our body. The vessel walls change and become thicker. Diseases such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's also leave their mark. Several pathological vascular alterations begin in the small vessels. The retina is one of the few places in the human body that provides an undistorted optical view of our microvessels. With modern non-invasive in-vivo imaging technique of retinal vessel analysis, various aspects of microvascular alterations can be examined objectively. A fast, precise individual diagnosis of vascular pathology becomes possible.
