Academic Writing

Content

Effective writing is an indispensable skill for researchers seeking to disseminate their work through peerreviewed journals. However, achieving the necessary standard for publication can pose significant challenges. This comprehensive two-day writing workshop is tailored to the needs of graduate students and early career researchers aiming to enhance their academic writing proficiency in English. The following topics are dealt with:

  • The writing process
  • Cultural differences in writing and reader expectations
  • Introducing a narrative into an academic text
  • Structuring an English paper (with a focus on the introduction)
  • Composing well-structured paragraphs and sentences
  • Identifying typical mistakes and how to avoid them
  • Punctuating an English text
  • Writing abstracts and titles
  • Understanding what reviewers are looking for
  • Working with a model paper
  • Editing your own work and concise writing

Aims

  • Improving the style and structure of English academic papers
  • Feeling more confident in writing research articles in English
  • Having a range of techniques to make thir writing more engaging
  • Ideally everyone should come away from the course  with a well-written abstract and/or introduction to a paper

Methods

This workshop is intended to be lively with plenty of discussion, pair work and group exercises. Attendees are invited to bring at least two research articles from their
respective fields. These articles can be chosen from journals in which they aspire to publish or from sources they consider good examples of readable writing. Participants are also encouraged to bring a sample of their current writing, which will serve as the foundation for constructive peer review during the second day of the workshop. Participants will also receive individual feedback and corrections on their writing following the workshop.
