Publishing Strategies: Writing Effective Abstracts

Description

In the academic world, well-written abstracts play an important role in convincing journal editors and conference organisers to accept a paper for review, or to invite a researcher to present at a conference. This workshop is geared at young researchers who need to publish in English-medium journals and to present at international conferences. It helps you to better understand and deal with peer review processes work. By analysing abstracts from your own field of research and by practicing abstract writing, you take some steps on your way of becoming a more competent and successful writer in your discipline.

The workshop is held in English and comprises individual writing exercises, small group work, plenary discussions, and trainer inputs from writing pedagogy, English didactics, linguistics, and communication sciences. The small group size allows you to discuss experiences, ask questions and receive feedback both from the trainer and the other participants.

  • Types and functions of abstracts
  • Characteristics of effective abstracts
  • Surviving the peer review process, and understanding peer reviews
